Junction with BC Highway 20/Chilcotin Highway (description follows). For access to Williams Lake Stampede Campground, follow Highway 20 to right turn on Mackenzie Avenue South then follow signs to camping. The scenic Chilcotin Highway (BC Highway 20) leads 279 miles/450 km west from Williams Lake through cattle range lands of the Fraser Plateau to Bella Coola. Highway 20 is paved and in good condition with some grades. A narrow, 37-mile/60- km stretch of gravel makes a switchback descent from the top of Heckman Pass (elev. 5,000 feet/1,524m) into the Bella Coola Valley; 12 to 18 percent grades (vehicles towing fifth wheelers or travel trailers test your brakes before attempting). Attractions along Highway 20 include Bull Canyon Provincial Recreation Area; fishing and bird watching at Anahim Lake; and Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, home of Hunlen Falls (Canada’s second highest waterfall). Bella Coola offers most visitor services and is served by BC Ferries connector service to Shearwater, Oceans Falls and Bella Bella. NOTE: See Discovery Coast Connector and Inside Passage schedules at www.bcferries.com for service to Port Hardy or Prince Rupert. Read schedules carefully and book well in advance.
